Browser history vs. bookmarks vs. read-later apps
The real difference between these tools is when you decide a page matters. Bookmarks and read-later apps ask you to decide before you know whether you'll need the page again. Searchable history doesn't ask you to decide at all: you keep reading, and later you search your browsing history for whatever turned out to matter.
Each approach solves a different recall problem. Here is when each one works, and where it falls short.
Bookmarks
Works when you know a page matters right now and you plan to open it again on purpose. Falls short when you didn't save the page in the moment, or when the folder you filed it in no longer means anything to you.
Read-later apps
Works when you want a queue of articles to get to later, kept in one place. Falls short when the page you need is one you've already read, because a read-later list holds what you meant to read, not what you did.
Built-in browser history
Works when you're looking for a recent visit and can name its title or part of its URL. Falls short when you only remember what the page said, because browser history stores titles and URLs, and Chrome's History lists only the last 90 days. The full comparison is in Datarag vs. Chrome history.
Searchable history
Works when you remember what a page said but not where it was, since the content of each page is indexed and a phrase or topic is enough to find it. Falls short for pages you haven't read yet, for incognito or private browsing, which is never captured, and for adult, gambling and social media content, which is filtered out of the index. See how Datarag handles security for what gets saved.
Datarag is a browser extension that saves and indexes everything you read online, so you can search your full browsing history in plain language — or ask an AI about it.
These approaches combine. Keep bookmarks for the handful of pages you'll reopen on purpose, and let searchable history cover everything else you've read. When you need a page you never saved, see how to find a page you visited.
